Полное руководство по симптомам, причинам и профилактике инфекций мочевыводящих путей у кошек

Cat Urinary Tract Infection Symptoms

A cat’s urinary system is extremely vulnerable, with high incidences of diseases such as urinary blockage, cystitis, and urinary stones. Male cats, in particular, are at high risk. If these diseases are not treated promptly, a cat’s life could be in danger within 48 hours! Many cat owners lack knowledge about cat urinary tract infection symptoms and other related diseases, often missing the best treatment time. Today, we’ll break down the key points of feline urinary system diseases, from causes to solutions, to help you safeguard your furry friend’s “urinary health.”

1. Core Types of Feline Urinary System Diseases and Common Causes

    1.1 Common Disease Types

Lower Urinary Tract Syndrome: The most common urinary disease, characterized by frequent urination, urgency, and pain during urination. It’s more common in adult cats, mainly triggered by stress and improper diet.

Urinary Stones/Crystals: Minerals in the urine precipitate to form stones or crystals, which can block the urethra. Male cats are at a much higher risk of blockage due to their narrow urethras compared to female cats.

Cystitis: Inflammation of the bladder mucosa, divided into bacterial and non – bacterial types. The former is caused by bacterial infections, while the latter is often related to stress and a weakened immune system.

Urinary Blockage: Complete blockage of the urethra, preventing the cat from urinating. It’s an emergency. If not treated in time, it can lead to bladder rupture and kidney failure, resulting in death.

    1.2 Common Triggers – Don’t Ignore These!

Diet: Long – term feeding of dry food high in salt and phosphorus but low in water can cause urine to become concentrated, making it easier for minerals to form stones. Insufficient water intake is a common trigger for all urinary diseases.

Cat Litter and Litter Box Issues: Cat litter with high dust, poor clumping ability, and strong odors, or infrequent cleaning and an insufficient number of litter boxes, can make cats reluctant to use the litter box. Deliberate urine retention can lead to diseases. Also, litter with overly large or small particles may scratch the urethral mucosa.

Stress: Stress factors such as moving, changing food, adding a new pet, or loud noises can disrupt a cat’s endocrine system, change the composition of urine, and trigger cystitis or urinary blockage.

Physiological Characteristics: Male cats have narrow and long urethras, making them more prone to blockages by stones and crystals. Obese cats may also be at a higher risk as abdominal fat can compress the urethra.

    2. Detect Disease Signals Early – Don’t Delay!

The golden treatment window for feline urinary diseases is short. Cat owners should remember the following typical symptoms and be vigilant as soon as they appear:

      • Frequent visits to the litter box, but only urinating a few drops or not at all. The cat may be tense and scream while trying to urinate.
      • Blood in the urine (appearing pink or red), or cloudy, smelly urine.
      • Frequent licking of the urethral opening, which may be red, swollen, and have discharge.
      • Lethargy, loss of appetite, a hard and swollen abdomen (due to a full bladder). In severe cases, the cat may vomit and become dehydrated.

Special Reminder: If a male cat shows symptoms of “no urine,” it must be taken to the vet within 24 hours. The longer the delay, the higher the risk of kidney failure and bladder rupture!

      3. Scientific Solutions: Treatment and Care Hand in Hand

3.1 Seek Medical Attention Promptly and Treat Symptomatically

        Medical Examination:

Use urine tests, B – scans, and X – rays to check for stones, infections, etc. After identifying the cause, provide targeted treatment.

        Emergency Treatment:

Cats with urinary blockage need immediate catheterization to drain the urine from the bladder and reduce kidney damage. Cats with infectious cystitis need antibiotics, and those with stones may require medication to dissolve the stones or surgical treatment.

        Follow the Vet’s Instructions:

Don’t give your cat human medications (such as painkillers and anti – inflammatories) on your own. Strictly follow the vet’s instructions and have regular check – ups.

3.2 Daily Care to Prevent Recurrence

        Diet Adjustment

Increase Water Intake: Feed wet food (canned food, homemade meat stew) and use a water fountain to ensure that the cat drinks at least 50ml of water per kilogram of body weight per day (e.g., a 4kg cat should drink over 200ml per day).

Choose Urinary Prescription Food: For cats prone to stones and crystals, prescription food can adjust the urine’s pH and reduce the precipitation of minerals, preventing stone recurrence.

Cat Litter and Litter Box Management

Select High – Quality Cat Litter: Choose cat litter with low dust, good clumping ability, and no fragrance (such as mixed litter or tofu litter) to avoid irritating the cat’s urethra.

Keep it Clean: Scoop the litter daily, thoroughly clean and disinfect the litter box weekly. In multi – cat households, ensure there is one more litter box than the number of cats. Place the litter boxes in quiet, secluded areas to reduce the cat’s stress when using them.

        Reduce Stress

Avoid frequent moving and food changes. Provide a quiet resting environment for the cat. Use cat scratching posts and toys to relieve stress, especially for senior and obese cats.

        Regular Check – ups

Take your cat for a urine test and B – scan once a year. For cats with a history of urinary diseases, have a check – up every six months to detect potential problems early.

        4. A Guide to Avoiding Pitfalls for Cat Owners

          (1) Don’t Ignore “Frequent and Scant Urination”: Some cat owners think that “the more a cat drinks, the more it urinates.” However, frequent and scant urination may be a sign of disease and should be checked promptly.

          (2) Don’t Blindly “Promote Urination”: When a cat has urinary blockage, forcing it to drink water or using diuretics can increase the bladder’s burden and may lead to bladder rupture. First, drain the urine and then replenish the water.

          (3) Avoid Long – Term Single – Dry – Food Feeding: Dry food has a low water content. Long – term feeding can cause urine to become concentrated and increase the risk of stones. It’s recommended that wet food make up at least 50% of the diet.

Although feline urinary system diseases are serious, early detection, timely treatment, and scientific daily care can effectively reduce the incidence and recurrence rate. As a cat owner, pay more attention to your cat’s urination status and manage its diet, cat litter, and environment well. This way, you can build a solid defense for your furry friend’s urinary health and keep them away from pain and illness.
